N.Y. Opens Gay H.S.

The Harvey Milk School, for gay adolescents who have been unable to adjust to ordinary high schools, opened in New York in April. Operated by the New York City Board of Education and the Institute for the Protection of Lesbian and Gay Youth, a gay advocacy and counselling group, the school has 20 students, 6 females and 14 males. Nathan Quinones, Schools Chancellor, described them as unable to adjust to harrassment by other high school students. denied that the Board of Education has endorsed homosexuality. The Institute holds that most gay students are better off in regular schools but these have problems with sexual identity and need a special environment. Announcement of the Harvey Milk School's existence predictably drew complaints from the New York Post, the New York Daily News, and religious groups. Some educators denounced it as segregationist. New York City gained its third openly gay judge in May, when Mayor Koch appointed Richard Failla, 44, to the city's Criminal Court.
